How to convert M4b to MP3 for free?

Introduction.

M4b is a special format for audio books based on the MPEG-4 Part 14 standard, it is very similar to M4a with additional support for audio book chapters. Many M4b audio books are available on the internet for free, more can be purchased in online stores like iTunes. However, the M4b format is rarely supported by portable players other than devices from Apple. If you have a typical portable MP3 player, you may want to convert M4b to MP3.

This can be easily done with a completely free program, Free M4a to MP3 Converter. The program fully supports M4b, including very big files.

Step 1: Download and install the program.

Download Free M4a to MP3 Converter to your computer and start the downloaded file. Follow on-screen instructions to install the M4b converter.

Step 2: Start the program. Add M4b files to convert.

Start the M4b converter. Its main window will be shown:

Click the "Add files..." button on the toolbar of the program. A usual "Open file" dialog will pop up:

In the "Output format" area (1), make sure that MP3 is selected. Advanced users can adjust bitrate, frequency and mode (number of audio channels) by clicking the "Setup..." button. We will simply use the default settings that are good for most cases.

Now let's take a look at the "Output folder" area (2). Here we can specify where our converted MP3 files should be saved. We can use the same folder where our original M4b files are stored, or choose any available location. Click the folder icon on the right of the "Specify folder" field to browse folders on your computer.

Finally, click the "Convert" button on the toolbar.

Depending on their size, the process may take some time. For our example, we selected one 7-hours long file, and another one 10,5 hours long. The conversion process took several minutes on our PC. You can click the "Minimize" button to minimize the window and continue working with your system while the files are being converted.

After converting your audio books the program will show the following message:

You can open the folder containing the converted MP3 files or just close the message window with "OK".
