How to convert MP4 to MP3?

MP4 files can contain both audio and video information. MP4 is part of the MPEG standard for multimedia and is also known as MPEG-4 Part 14.

As our destination format is the audio-only MP3 format, we will discuss MP4 audio files here. Just like video files, they can have the .mp4 filename extension, but some publishers prefer using extensions like .m4a to emphasize that the file contains only audio data. MP4 files can be protected with the DRM (Digital Rights Management) technology, but in this case they cannot be converted as usual, as hacking DRM-protection is prohibited in most countries. Thus we can only convert unprotected MP4 files, and that's what we will do in this article using a completely free program, Free MP4 to MP3 Converter.

Step 1: Download and install the program.

Convert MP4 to MP3

Free MP4 to MP3 Converter recognizes MP4 tags automatically and transfers information, such as artist, title, album art, and so on, to the output MP3 files.

Now you can decide where to save your output MP3 files (1). By default, the converted files are saved into the same folder where the source MP4 files are stored, but you can choose any other folder on your computer.

Finally, click the "Convert" button on the toolbar (2) to convert your MP4 to MP3.

Additionally, you can adjust bitrate, frequency and number of channels for your output MP3 files by clicking the "Setup..." button in the "Output format" area. Your preferences will be saved and used next time.

When converting your files, Free MP4 to MP3 Converter will display a progress window. After the progress window disappears, you can find converted MP3 files in the output folder you specified (1).
